Brief History of Chiang Mai — The Ancient Lanna Capital

The Cultural Heart of the NorthThe Cultural Heart of the North
Founded in 1296 CE by King Mengrai the Great, Chiang Mai was established as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom “the Land of a Million Rice Fields.” For centuries, it thrived as the political and cultural center of Northern Thailand, blending Buddhist faith, art, and mountain life into one unique identity.

Later, Chiang Mai came under Burmese influence before rejoining Siam in the late 18th century.
Despite modernization, the city has preserved its distinctive Lanna architecture, traditions, and gentle way of life. Today, Chiang Mai stands as a living museum of northern culture — where ancient heritage, serene nature, and creative spirit coexist beautifully.
